Introduction

For several years now, engineering plastics have been generating higher growth rates than standard plastics. This trend will continue to strengthen considering the growing demand for increasingly efficient and lighter material due to the special physical and chemical characteristics of engineering plastics. The market research company Ceresana analyzed the world market for engineering plastics already for the second time: Currently, demand for the plastics types ABS, PC, PA, PMMA, POM, PBT, SAN, and fluoropolymers amounts to almost 20.3 million tonnes per year.

Ceresana has comprehensively analyzed the market for engineering plastics as a whole as well as the data for individual types of plastics. This study provides both figures on demand, revenues, production, and trade of the whole market, as well as demand volume of the individual product types and their applications. The market for engineering plastics is dominated by acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). This plastics type accounts for approx. 40% of the total demand. More than 6 million tonnes were processed in 2015 in the region Asia-Pacific alone. ABS is used in transportation (components for glove compartments and seats, door panels) and E&E (cases for electronic equipment). But it also finds application in the construction industry (film, pipes, and sheets) and in household appliances and consumer goods (shower head, toys, sports and leisure goods).

On a global level, electrical and electronic applications as well as consumer goods are among the most important sales market for many engineering plastics - almost 25% of global demand originates in each of these two sectors. The third largest individual market is the transportation industry which will account for the highest growth in the upcoming years along with products for the segment E&E. At rates of 2.5% and 2.9% p.a., application in the construction industry and in consumer goods will exhibit a weaker development. The effects on the particular products can be very different. While Transportation accounts for 35% of polyamide (PA) consumption, consumer goods are the major consumers of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS).
