Introduction

The market research institute Ceresana forecasts market value of the worldwide urea market to increase to around US$96 billion in 2019 at dynamic growth rates. Growing population increases the demand for foodstuffs. As less acreage is dedicated to crop cultivation, yield per hectare has to be increased. Therefore, more urea is used as fertilizer. Ceresana Research forecasts urea demand to rise at an average annual rate of 3.2% over the next years.
Asia-Pacific already is the largest sales market for urea, accounting for almost two thirds of total demand, followed by North America. In the next eight years, Asia-Pacific will gain additional market shares. Market researchers at Ceresana expect populous countries such as China and India to expand their position in the worldwide urea market.
Changes in regional demand will also have an effect on the production structure of manufacturers. The global urea capacity of approximately 184 million tonnes is anticipated to be expanded by 71 million tonnes in 2019. Almost 50% of these new capacities will be built in the Asia-Pacific region.
