Introduction

The worldwide market for inorganic, organic and special pigments had a total volume of around 7,4 million tons in 2006. At growth rates of x,x% p.a. this volume will rise to x,x million tons in 2016. Asia has the highest rate on a quantity basis followed by Europe and North America. In 2006, a turnover of 17,6 billion US$ (13 billion Euro) was reached mostly in Europe, followed by North America and Asia. The turnover will increase to xx,x billion US$ (xx,x billion Euro) untill 2016. This corresponds to an annual growth rate of x%. Although organic pigments only account for 5% on a quantity basis, they have a rate of 28% on a value basis.

Shift to Asia

Demand and production of pigments are continually shifting from the USA, Western Europe and Japan to the emerging markets of Asia, especially China and India. This is mainly because wages there are lower and environmental regulations less strict.

In the emerging countries themselves, domestic demand for consumption products containing pigments is growing. While few large suppliers of pigments dominate the relatively saturated markets of industrialized countries, the market in Asia is still very much fragmented. New Asian suppliers constitute an additional margin pressure on established manufacturers.

Growth is driven by market areas

Almost all industrial sectors need pigments: printing ink, paints, lacquers, and plastics are growth markets for pigments. More and more manufacturers use new colours and visual effects for their packaging and advertising material. In addition, sectors such as cosmetics, paper, textile, building material, ceramics, and glass make great demands on pigments to add more brilliance to their products. Textile industry increasingly substitutes pigments for dyes.

Strong growth in special pigments

Redevelopments, especially by established companies in the US, Japan and Western Europe, offer unique features and competition advantages: corrosion prevention, pearlescent or metal effects, magnetic, transparent, or luminescent pigments.

Organic pigments substitute inorganic pigments

Surpassing growth in organic pigments will continue as these pigments offer a larger colour spectrum and increasingly supplant pigments on a heavy metal basis. Today many environmental regulations restrict the use of lead, chromium, and cadmium.

Price development

Despite sufficient capacities, pigment prices are rising exceedingly. Prices for raw material, energy, transport, wages and products mutually drive up the price on the market. Nevertheless, price increase is limited by the shift of pigment production to Asia.

In this independent market study by Ceresana Research, latest data and facts, developments and trends of the pigments market are thoroughly analysed and concisely presented. Data about the pigment market as well as the most important types of pigments are subdivided on a value and quantity basis and by regions. In addition, the study informs about the legal situation, environment and health, areas of application as well as more than 250 manufacturers. This worldwide report offers a current overview of the sector and its markets as well as prospects until 2016.
